What are some examples of inappropriate gifts?

When it comes to gift-giving, there are few guidelines for regifting, but many misplaced items end up being just plain inappropriate. Unfortunately, it can be hard to determine when a gift crosses the line from simply bad taste or awkward to offensive and inappropriate. To avoid the prospect of someone being offended, here are examples of some gifts that should ideally be avoided as presents.

1. Perfume or Cologne: Imagine gifting someone who does not care for strong scents. Not only would this gift not be appreciated, but it could trigger negative reactions due to allergies or smell sensitivities. An alternative to perfume might be a nice lavender-scented candle or an essential oil diffuser.

2. Clothing: Unless someone specifies they want an article of clothing in their size and style choices, gifting it can be such an iffy situation that it is ultimately more trouble than what it is worth. A safer choice would be to give a gift card so they can shop for themselves and select something they like and wish to wear without hesitation.

3. Personal Products: There are many great items ranging from shavers and beard trimmers to nail clippers that may seem like thoughtful gifts at first glance – up until you realize how personal these products are. Nobody wants their intimate grooming habits or practices revealed through a present, nor do they want a comment on how closely-groomed they may need to appear for their profession or even society in general!

4. Alcohol Gifts: No matter what occasion you're celebrating – especially during this COVID-era – gifting someone alcoholic beverages is neither safe nor appropriate without knowing what their relationship stands with drinking alcohol in the first place. If you do know of somebody who drinks alcohol responsibly, instead grab some craft beer samplers, interesting bottles of liqueur, or nice wines as safer selections – though still not recommended choices as gifts!
